Calculate The Numbers

Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) Calculator

Explore how regular withdrawals could affect an investment corpus. See the projected remaining balance, total withdrawals and whether the corpus runs out during the modeled period.

Estimated remaining corpus
—
Constant effective annual return with end-of-month withdrawals. Market volatility and the order of returns can change how long a corpus lasts.

How to use the Systematic Withdrawal Plan calculator

Explore a regular withdrawal from a starting investment corpus. The calculator shows remaining funds and the effect of withdrawals under a constant-return assumption.

Starting corpus
Enter the amount available at the start of the withdrawal period.
Monthly withdrawal
Enter the amount requested at each month-end. Zero models growth without withdrawals.
Annual return and period
Enter an effective annual assumption and whole years from 1 to 50. Negative returns can be modeled.

Select Calculate, review the result and its breakdown, then change one input at a time to compare scenarios.

02 · THE CALCULATION

Formula and calculation method

The effective annual return is converted into an equivalent monthly rate. Each month, the opening balance grows first, then the requested withdrawal is made. If funds are insufficient, only the remaining amount is withdrawn and the projection stops.

Monthly rate i = (1 + R)^(1 ÷ 12) − 1; closing balance = max(0, opening balance × (1 + i) − withdrawal)
03 · A WORKED EXAMPLE

See the numbers in context

₹10,00,000 with ₹10,000 withdrawn monthly over 10 years at an assumed effective annual 8% leaves about ₹3,57,682. Total withdrawn is ₹12,00,000 and projected net growth is ₹5,57,682 before costs and taxes.

04 · MAKE SENSE OF IT

What your result means

Remaining corpus is money still invested after withdrawals. Withdrawals may include both principal and growth. The corpus-status line shows whether funds remain through the selected term or run out in a modeled month.

Scenarios worth comparing

  • Try a higher withdrawal to see when the corpus could be exhausted.
  • Compare lower and negative return assumptions before treating a withdrawal amount as dependable income.
05 · KNOW THE LIMITS

Assumptions and limitations

  • Returns are smooth and constant; sequence-of-returns risk and market volatility are not modeled.
  • Withdrawals occur at month-end and stay fixed; inflation-linked increases are excluded.
  • Taxes, redemption charges, exit loads and changes in asset allocation are excluded.
  • A final withdrawal can be smaller than requested. This is not a guaranteed pension or income product.
06 · COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is an SWP withdrawal entirely interest?

No. Withdrawals can redeem principal as well as investment growth.

What happens when funds run out?

The final payment is limited to funds available. The table stops at depletion and identifies the modeled month.

Does a positive remaining balance prove the plan is safe?

No. Actual returns and their order can differ substantially from the smooth assumption.
