How to use the Goal Savings calculator

Set a future target amount, enter money already saved for this goal and choose the number of months remaining. Use an assumed annual return to estimate equal monthly savings. The target should already include any inflation allowance you want to make.

Target at the goal date
Enter the desired future-rupee amount, rather than today’s cost if the goal is expected to become more expensive.
Current savings
Enter the amount already invested or set aside specifically for this goal.
Annual return
Enter an effective annual assumption. Negative rates are supported for a steady-loss scenario.
Time remaining
Choose a whole number of months, from 1 to 1200.

Select Calculate, review the result and its breakdown, then change one input at a time to compare scenarios.

02 · THE CALCULATION

Formula and calculation method

The existing amount first grows to the goal date. Any positive difference from the target is funded through equal month-end contributions. The annual return is converted to an equivalent monthly rate. At zero return, required monthly savings are the gap divided by the number of months.

i = (1 + annual return)^(1/12) − 1; gap = max(0, target − current savings × (1 + i)ⁿ); monthly saving = gap / [((1 + i)ⁿ − 1)/i].
03 · A WORKED EXAMPLE

See the numbers in context

To reach ₹10,00,000 in 60 months with ₹1,00,000 already saved and an assumed effective annual 8% return, monthly savings are about ₹11,695. Unrounded monthly contributions total about ₹7,01,683, with projected net growth of ₹1,98,317. Together with initial savings, this reaches the target under the model.

What your result means

The monthly amount is calculated using unrounded numbers, although the result is displayed in whole rupees. The annual table separates total money contributed from net growth or loss. If existing savings already reach the future target, the model sets extra monthly savings to zero.

Scenarios worth comparing

  • Allow more months and compare how the monthly savings change.
  • Use a lower return assumption to reduce dependence on projected growth.
  • Increase the target to allow for inflation or increase the amount already saved.
05 · KNOW THE LIMITS

Assumptions and limitations

  • Contributions occur at each month-end and remain constant.
  • Returns are constant effective annual growth; no product or provider return is promised.
  • The target is not automatically adjusted for inflation; use the Inflation calculator to estimate a future cost.
  • Taxes, charges, withdrawals and missed contributions are excluded.

06 · COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this for education or a home deposit?

Yes, if you enter an appropriate future target and horizon. The calculator does not assess whether a particular investment is suitable for that goal.

What if I expect no return?

Enter 0%. Required monthly savings then equal the unfunded target divided by remaining months.

Why does my SIP calculator show a different amount?

Contribution timing and rate conventions may differ. This tool uses month-end contributions and an effective annual rate converted into equivalent monthly growth.
