Estimate education loan repayments with a moratorium and a choice to pay or defer interest.
How to use the Education Loan EMI calculator
Enter the amount fully disbursed, annual rate, months before EMI repayment and the EMI term after that period. Choose whether moratorium interest is paid as it accrues or added to principal when repayment begins. After calculating, select Monthly or Annual above the repayment table. Monthly shows each payment period; Annual groups the same payments by repayment year.
- Fully disbursed amount
- The model assumes all principal is released at the start.
- Annual rate
- Nominal constant annual interest rate.
- Months before EMI
- Total course and moratorium time remaining before repayment begins; enter your actual applicable period.
- Moratorium interest
- Choose to pay it during the waiting period or capitalize it at EMI commencement.
- EMI term
- Repayment months after the waiting period, not the total loan lifecycle.
- Loan effective month
- The month this modeled loan, transfer or prepayment starts. Defaults to the current month in India and can be changed.
Select Calculate, review the result and its breakdown, then change one input at a time to compare scenarios.
Formula and calculation method
Interest before EMI repayment is modeled as simple interest on the full amount for the entered months. Deferred interest is added once when EMI repayment starts. Serviced interest is paid separately. Monthly EMI then uses the resulting principal and constant reducing-balance rate.
See the numbers in context
With ₹10,00,000 fully disbursed, 10% interest and 24 months before EMI repayment, simple moratorium interest is ₹2,00,000. Deferring it makes the repayment principal ₹12,00,000. Over the next 120 months, EMI is about ₹15,858; all repayments total ₹19,02,971.

The EMI applies after the moratorium. Review the enlarged principal and total modeled time as well as the monthly result. The repayment table starts at EMI month one; it does not show staged study-period disbursements.
Scenarios worth comparing
- Change one assumption at a time to understand its effect on payments and total cost.
- Compare a shorter term with the cash-flow flexibility of a longer term.
- Use the complete rate and fee quote rather than an advertised starting rate.
Assumptions and limitations
- Rates are constant nominal annual rates, with monthly reducing-balance interest and month-end EMI payments. At zero interest, EMI equals repayment principal divided by months.
- The schedule uses exact values internally and rounds displayed rupee amounts. Lender rounding, payment dates and daily accrual may differ.
- The entire loan is disbursed at the start; waiting-period interest is simple interest. No subsidy, tax benefit, insurance, fees or staged disbursement is modeled.
- Charges and permission to transfer or prepay depend on your contract and applicable rules. The tool does not determine lender eligibility or fee legality.
- The first EMI is assumed in the month after the selected effective month, following any education-loan moratorium. End month includes the full repayment term; a prepayment can bring it forward. Calendar choices do not change the modeled EMI or interest.
Frequently asked questions
Is a moratorium interest-free?
Not in this model. Interest accrues during the entered period unless the rate is zero. Subsidies or a lender-specific interest waiver must be assessed separately.
Why does paying interest during study reduce EMI?
Servicing interest prevents the modeled accrued amount from enlarging repayment principal. It requires cash payments before EMI repayment begins.
Will this exactly match a bank schedule?
Not necessarily. Staged disbursements, daily accrual, rate resets, subsidies and lender-specific capitalization rules can change the figures.
